Feathers, Feathers, and more: Advanced Free Motion Quilting with Colleen Blackwood

Design and begin quilting a project in this class – design and marking start the discussion, then begin quilting with your choice of threads.  Basic machine quilting experience is necessary to have success in this class.  Please bring the following items to class:

Sewing machine in good working order with instruction manual

Sewing machine needles:    size 90 topstitch, a discussion of needles to use will be part of class

Threads to stitch with – try different weight threads to see the difference – some should be a color that matches the fabric and some could be contrasting.

I would like it if everyone had:

50 wt. cotton thread

40 wt. cotton thread – King Tut for example

40 or 50 weight trilobal polyester thread – Isacord and Superior brands are good

Bottom Line for the bobbin

Other threads to think about, but not needed for class:

My next favorite thread to use is a rayon – high sheen, can be a bit temperamental

Metallic – some good ones, some bad ones, we will talk about them….

We won't be bobbin quilting on this project, so we won't use Razzle or Dazzle….

**Project quilt that is ready to quilt – I would suggest 45 x 45 as the largest size –this class is great to start a small whole cloth project.  I will be bringing a couple small pieces that consist of orphan blocks sewn together for a center, with borders around to add the quilting.  I am excited to see how these work, because we all have orphan blocks!

Batting and backing –layer the quilt in preparation for class – we will mark around the safety pins.  I do like to use 505 spray adhesive to layer with, but pins are necessary to transport the piece around and not have the spray lose its stickum.

Blue wash out marker pen

Ruler, flexible curve or templates you may have that you want to try….suggestion only – don't buy things til you see how we use them.

Sketch pad or paper for drawing out designs before marking them on the quilts.

I will be bringing some practice papers to give you ideas

Pencil or pen for note taking
